rolling away from a light, already moving you bury the throttle and light up both tires.
(not me)
Driving the sportwagen on a milk run tonight, just leaving the stop light already doing 7-10, put my foot into it and both tires go at it (good tires too)
People who say they don't have fun in a tdi haven't gotten to know the character of the car yet...its a blast.

Its a little different and very non-linear, but its fun to get to know a car so well that you can anticipate its moves and pre-plan, a-la diving into a corner and getting on the throttle at corner entry so you can be full steam on the way out.

Well, my parents both had Golf TDI 130 or 150 for the past 12 years... I hate them they suck. Diesel sucks in general. But most people in north america have no idea about how they are, they try them out and oh, cool, torque... Yeah, oh cool, shifting at 4000rpm (or less) all the time, how fun. And diesel sounds bad.

More like a french citizen who has spent his entire life surrounded by diesel and who knows how bad they really are, unlike most people from north america who suffer of the "we can't have it therefore it's awesome" disease...

So what? I'm German, I grew up with diesels, my family has been running diesel for 30 years and god knows how many cars, and I still prefer diesels over petrol anyday. Just because you have become tired of diesels it doesn't mean that all of them suck. Frankly there are enough crappy diesel engines (see Oldsmobile), but same goes for petrols.

Yup, diesel is AWESOME... Oh yeah, but there is "clean diesel" now lol

Because diesels are the sole source of pollution. Right.

Traffic is responsible for about 60% of the No2 pollution in Paris and yes out of these 60%, 91% exists thanks to Diesel cars... PM10 and PM 2.5 particles come at 96% from diesels (this "fog" that you see). As far as greenhouse gas are concerned, 27% of these come from traffic. Considering that over 80% of cars in France are diesels...

You still can't blame diesel for all the pollution in the world.

Nope but I can blame it for my asthma though and for a vast majority of the pollution in cities like Paris...

Just for the record, is the pollution in Paris that bad nowadays? And do the streets still smell like urine?

lol yeah streets still smell like pee (especially the metro) and yup pollution is still as bad. This is what happen when you live in a country where diesel is actually subventioned by the state (france is one of the very rare country where diesel costs less than gas, thanks to our government pushing people to buy diesel cars, notoriously loved by french car manufacturers...

No it doesn't happen due to the number of diesel cars, it happens because people think they have to use their car for literally everything , even if they could have done this much easier using a bicycle or by simply on foot. And by using the car for buying milk at a store 300 meters away these people waste fuel and create traffic jams and pollution. The cars just happen to be diesel because fuel is cheaper, even if diesel is only really viable for commercial applications and people who do high mileages a year.

Gas cars do not create particles... So while it pollutes also, it's quite a less nocive pollution than what Diesels do... I don't blame my asthma on people because they happen to use their cars too much, I blame it on my country who pushed the consumption of these cars. Had it be like a normal country, with more expensive diesel and so on (afterall diesel cost more to produce than gasoline), I would not be the way I am. I now live in Montreal, but was living in SF and Seattle before... I have yet to do asthma crisis in North America. When I go to Paris though, it's a whole other story...

So there you have it it's not the engines fault, it's the governments fault. The taxes for diesel fuel in europe are very low for giving high mileage vehicles such as Trucks and other utility vehicles a cost advantage, but due to the ever rising oil prices more and more people buy diesel instead of petrol, even if it wouldn't be viable. I'll admit that diesel is much more suited to commercial and military applications rather than low-mileage everyday use, but unfortunately it seems you'll have to live with the current situation for now until EV's ultimately take over.
